Lock Rekeying in Geelong
New keys, fewer keys, and better control over who can access your property.
Just moved into a new home? Or tired of carrying different keys for every door?
I provide lock rekeying services across Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast. Whether you want to stop old keys from working, have multiple doors operating on the same key, or explore a small master key system, I can help you find a practical solution.
Moved Into a New Home? Start With the Keys
When you buy a property, you never really know how many copies of the existing keys are out there.
Previous owners may have given spare keys to family, friends, neighbours or real estate agents. If the property was previously rented, former tenants may also have copies.
Rekeying changes the internal combination of a suitable lock so the old keys no longer work. In many cases, you can keep your existing locks and simply have them rekeyed to new keys, without the expense of replacing all the hardware.
It's also worth checking your security screen and sliding door locks, even in a newly built home.
Some locks may be supplied in pre-keyed-alike groups, where multiple locks are supplied to operate with the same key rather than being individually keyed to your property.
Having these locks individually rekeyed can remove that uncertainty and give you a fresh set of keys.
Why Carry Five Keys When You Could Carry One?
Many homes have different keys for the front security door, front door, back door, laundry, garage and sliding doors.
Where the locks are compatible, I can rekey them to operate with the same key. This is called keying alike.
Imagine coming home and unlocking your security screen door and front door with the same key, without having to search through your keyring for another one.
The same key could also operate your laundry door, garage access door and sliding doors.
Even window locks, letterboxes, garage roller door locks and some padlocks can potentially be keyed alike. However, these may require replacement locks or cylinders, which adds to the cost.
The goal isn't necessarily to make every lock use one key at any cost. It's to reduce the number of keys you carry while keeping the solution practical and affordable.
Sometimes everything can operate on one key. Other times, reducing an entire house to just two keys is a great result without unnecessary expense.
Did You Know You Can Have a Master Key System at Home?
Master key systems aren't just for large commercial buildings. They can also be useful for homes, holiday properties and small businesses.
Imagine having one master key that opens your house, side gate and shed, while your gardener has a key that only opens the gate and shed.
For holiday accommodation, guests could have one key for the external doors, while your master key also opens private storage areas.
This allows you to give others access to the areas they need, without carrying multiple keys yourself.
Want More Control Over Who Can Copy Your Keys?
A master key system controls which locks each key can open. A registered restricted key system adds another benefit: control over who can obtain additional copies.
Ordinary house keys can generally be copied at hardware stores or key-cutting shops. With a registered restricted key system, additional keys can only be obtained through authorised channels, subject to the system's key control procedures.
One of the restricted key systems I offer is Carbine SIGMA X, which supports master keying and controlled key duplication. You can learn more about SIGMA X on Carbine's website.
This can be particularly useful for holiday rentals, where guests have access to a key, or when keys are issued to gardeners, cleaners, staff or contractors.
By combining master keying with restricted keys, you can manage both access to your property and the duplication of keys.
Not every property needs this level of control. Sometimes ordinary keyed-alike locks or separate keys are the more economical solution. I can explain the options and help you decide what's worthwhile.
Can All My Locks Be Rekeyed or Keyed Alike?
Not every lock is compatible with every key, and not every existing lock is worth rekeying.
Different manufacturers use different key profiles and locking mechanisms. Some locks can be rekeyed easily, while others may require a replacement cylinder or even a complete new lock to achieve the arrangement you want.
I'll explain what's practical, what can be keyed alike, and whether the additional cost is worthwhile.
The best solution is often the simplest one that meets your needs.
