What Really Stops an Intruder? Start with Locks and Doors

When it comes to home security in Geelong, many people think first of CCTV cameras and alarm systems. These tools have their place—but they don’t physically stop someone from getting inside.

If your main concern is keeping intruders out, the most effective defence is still the simplest: good locks and solid doors.

Locks and Doors Come First

Alarms might scare off a burglar once they’re already inside. CCTV footage can help identify them later—though most are in and out quickly with their faces covered. These are reactive tools.

But a quality deadlock or deadlatch installed on a solid door? That’s proactive security. It physically delays or stops an intruder from entering at all.

And it’s not just about strength—locks can be a deterrent too.
Adding an extra deadlock sends a clear message: this home won’t be an easy target.

What About Security Doors?

While I don’t install new security screen doors myself, I always recommend them to customers who want to boost their protection. A good-quality security door adds a second barrier—slowing down any forced entry attempt and increasing your safety, especially if you often leave your main door open for airflow.

Even better when combined with a triple lock system and installed correctly.

Just one thing to keep in mind:
If you’re getting multiple security doors installed, don’t accept a “keyed alike” system from the door installer unless it’s been properly keyed by a locksmith.
Most door manufacturers use a Keyed Alike (KA) pool system, which means the same key might work on other doors from the same pool—not just yours. I covered this in more detail in a previous blog post, but the key point is: if you want true security and unique keys, always get a locksmith to rekey the doors properly after installation.

Budgeting for What Matters

If you’re in a position to install alarms, CCTV, smart locks and more—go for it. But if your budget is limited, it’s best to start with:

  • A proper deadbolt or deadlatch

  • A second deadlock as a visual deterrent

  • A well-fitted security screen door (from a reputable installer)

  • Reinforced strike plates and solid door

  • Secured windows and patio doors

These are the things that actually slow someone down—or stop them altogether.
