Do Mechanical Keypad Locks Need the Numbers Entered in the Correct Order?

Most people assume a mechanical keypad lock works the same way as a phone, an alarm system or an ATM.

Enter the correct code in the wrong order, and the lock won't open.

With many traditional mechanical push-button locks, that's not necessarily true.

In fact, one of the biggest surprises for customers is discovering that the order of the numbers may not matter at all.

How do mechanical keypad locks actually work?

Unlike an electronic keypad, a traditional mechanical keypad lock doesn't use software, a circuit board or a battery.

Instead, it relies on a series of internal mechanical components that are physically set to a specific combination.

On many traditional models commonly found in Australia, the lock only checks which buttons have been pressed, not the order in which they're pressed.

For example, if the correct combination uses the numbers 2, 4 and 6, then pressing 2-4-6 may unlock the door.

However, 6-2-4 may also work.

So might 4-6-2.

Not every mechanical keypad lock works this way, but many traditional designs do.

Does that mean mechanical keypad locks are less secure?

Not necessarily.

Many people immediately assume that if the order doesn't matter, the lock must be insecure.

The reality is a little more complicated.

Mechanical keypad locks are designed differently from electronic PIN systems.

You can't simply create a code such as 1-1-1-1 or 2-2-2-2 to increase the number of possible combinations.

Most traditional mechanical locks also have restrictions on how the combination can be created.

Even though the sequence may not matter, there are still many possible combinations available.

Why are mechanical keypad locks still so popular?

The biggest advantage is simplicity.

Unlike electronic locks, traditional mechanical keypad locks don't rely on:

  • Batteries

  • Charging

  • Mobile apps

  • Bluetooth

  • Wi-Fi

That simplicity is one of the main reasons they've remained popular for so many years.

They're also commonly used on side gates and other secondary entry points where convenience is often just as important as security.

Changing the code isn't always as easy as people expect

Another common misconception is that changing the code is as simple as entering a new PIN.

With many traditional mechanical keypad locks, that's not the case.

Changing the combination often requires at least some degree of disassembly.

Depending on the lock, the process may involve removing the lock from the door and physically changing the internal code settings.

This is very different from most electronic locks, where changing the code can often be done through a menu or an app.

The most important thing is understanding the lock you're using

Mechanical keypad locks have been around for decades because they do a simple job well. They offer convenient keyless access without batteries, apps or electronics.

But they’re not the same as an electronic PIN lock, and the way the combination works can surprise people.

If you’re considering one, the important thing is to understand exactly how that particular lock handles its code, how easy it is to change, and whether convenience or security is your main priority.

For the right application, a mechanical keypad lock can still be a very practical choice.
